Adler Hall Redesign

Academic Entry; 2025

Savannah College of Art and Design’s Adler Hall is the school’s graphic design, branding and film building. The building’s environmental design is a “work in progress” – often referred to as “Sad-ler” from the school’s staff and students due to its low lighting, lack of expression and overall environment.

My Adler Hall Redesign project was an exploratory design of ways to improve the building’s student amenities and visual inspiration as someone who uses it day to day.

Lower Level Gallery

Redesigned Lower Level Gallery

The Lower Level’s gallery acts as a “lobby” to the lower level of the building. In my proposed redesign, I added tables, booths and chairs for study groups and independent chairs for lone studying. I also added shadow boxes to the walls for student work to be presented and digital rotating frames to allow for digital student work to be presented as well.

Redesigned “Fishbowl” Study Area

The Lower Level “Fish Bowl” acts as a collaboration and study area for students. I added more comfortable seating as well as moveable seating for larger study parties. I added “quiet” boxes, which are sound isolating boxes for lone students and a quick prototyping area fit with printers, laser cutting and ideation areas. I also split the room into two, allowing space for a ‘mini market',’ where students can get small snacks and drinks while spending their time on campus.

Front Entrance

Redesigned Adler Hall Front Entrance

The front entrance of Adler is known to not allow much room for comfortable seating for students to wait for their buses or enjoy class breaks. In order to fix this, I added lower seating closer to the parking lots entrance for students to wait for their buses out of the sidewalk so students don’t impact Indian Street’s daily foot traffic – due to Adler’s location being closer to Savannah’s popular tourist areas, this can also account for safety. My redesign included more comfortable, shaded seating for students to enjoy during their class breaks.

Parking Alley/Roof

Original Parking Alley

Added Amenity to Roof with Alley Entry

My redesign added a completely new area to the roof of Adler Hall with stair access from the school’s parking alley or elevator access from the building’s existing elevator. It adds additional seating along the perimeter of the building from the front as well as the back, booth/”nook” seating for student groups, and an astroturf game area. All furniture on the roof is moveable and the roof also includes a storage room, allowing for resetting for school events to be held separately from existing classrooms.

Using color psychology and object placement, I tried to redesign the building in a way that is both mentally stimulating and allows for student relaxation while in the building.
